Presentation title: Fire Protection and Life Safety in Health Care – How Safe is Safe?
Being involved in the applications of Codes and writing of Codes, has the fire protection and life safety in health care improved over the past 45 years? I delved into the fire incidents statics. I also looked at the enforcement techniques in the US. There are major technological improvements that have changed the fire environment in health care. We are taking many of the fire and life safety improvement over the past 40 years as given and looking to mandate more. The current fire safety performance in health care may not recognize where the risk is and the risk level. I hope to discuss how we arrived in 2026 with a level of performance and where we should look to improve in a cost-effective way. In a regulatory environment as US Health Care, changes are difficult, but the FPEs are equipped to identify the risk and propose the appropriate response in the upcoming Code development cycles. Health Care in the US is expensive. Let’s guide the Codes to cost-effective solutions for all.
Presenter: Mike Crowley – Jensen Hughes
Mike is a Principal Advisor with Coffman Engineers based in Houston, TX. He holds a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and an MBA from The University of Houston. Mike is a licensed professional engineer in 6 states. Mike has more than 40 years of fire protection engineering consulting experience. Professional organization involvement includes Fellow in Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Lifetime Member of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with past and present activity on NFPA Technical Committees including NFPA 101 – Healthcare Occupancies and Means of Egress Committee Chair, and NFPA 99 Correlating Committee, Fundamentals Technical Committee Chair and Technical Committee on Piping Systems Chair. Mike was the 2020 President of SFPE and current Member of NFPA Standards Council. He is a Life Safety Code and NFPA 99 instructor for NFPA. In addition, he is a Fellow Member of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE). Mike has authored numerous technical articles and made presentations at various conferences and symposiums. Mike provides consulting to architects, facility managers and building owners around the world.
